A concave spherical mirror (R = 2 m) is to be used
as a shaving mirror. If the shaver is 0.4 m from the
mirror, where is the image? What is its lateral
magnification?

Hi Sunidhi, as radius is 2 m then its focal length will be almost 1 m

f = - 1 m

Now u = - 0.4 m

In mirror formula 1/f = 1/u + 1/v

We have -1/1 = - 1/0.4 + 1/v

So 1/v = - 1 + 5/2 = 3/2

OR v = 2/3

As v is +ve by sign convention it is within mirror. So virtual image

Magnification = - v/u = - 2/3 * -5/2 = + 5/3

So virtual, erect and enlarged formed at a distance of 2/3 from the pole of mirror
