'God Lives in the Panch' by Premchand is a telling comment on the efficacy of the village panchayat system where Panch is an embodiment of God. Jumman Sheikh was shocked to hear the judgment against him when his maternal art went to panchayat for justice. Jumman's aunt was ill-treated by her nephew, i.e. Jumman and his wife Kariman after she had registered her property in Jumman's name. The judgment of Alagu in favor of Jumman's aunt caused a rift in their friendship. Alagu's justice was based on mere facts and not his bias towards his friend. Jumman couldn't understand it till later when he has to act as a panch in a case between Alagu Chowdhari and Samjhu Sahu who had not paid for the bullock he bought from Alagu on the pretext that the bullock died after he bought it.Actually, the bullock had died of overwork. Jumman realized that though he was embittered with Alagu's judgment against him earlier when he had to render justice he forgot the malice he bore against Alagu and gave his judgment in favor of Alagu. It was his experience that the Judgment is rendered by God himself by means of a panch. Their friendship revives after this incident.
