Let the no. of boxes be x
Now,
Boxes left after the confectioner bought 50 of the boxes= x+50
After 2 days,
The half of the boxes were used so, x+50/2=40
x+50=80
x=30
Therefore the no. of boxes in the beginning were 30 boxes.
