The poem ‘Snake’ is a search into the psychology of human nature. It leaves its impression deep in one’s mind. The poet has voiced some fundamental issues through the poem. The most striking aspect of the poem is the sense of conflict it evokes, such as man versus nature. The poem reflects the motive of mystic repression by the society and its instinctual reawakening. At some level we have all experienced a sense of confusion, intrigue, awe, lust, anger, guilt, shame, and ultimately sadness and wistfulness that overcomes us whenever we come face to face with our ‘deeper’ darker beings. The poem shows a conflict between nature and man. Nature is full of beauty and mystery, but rather than enjoying the beauty, man is destroying nature. The snake was beautiful but the poet tried to kill it.

The poet's dual attitude actually represents

mankind's conflicting thoughts about each and everything around him. Man is

always indecisive about most of the things. Man still is the slave of his

animalistic instincts and emotions. Fear is still the predominant emotion in

his pseudo-educated heart. So the poet when saw the snake first appreciated its

presence, however, the savage instincts eclipsed the civilized instincts; and

he felt his survival threatened and thus in spite of himself, threw a log at

him, though after it he regretted him.
