Answer: The original number of workers is 25.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the original number of workers,

Since, at the end of 5 days from, 7 of the men stopped working and 3 days later half of the remainder stopped working; the rest finished the work in 5 days.

Also, their work done is equal to a piece of work which can be done by 16 men in 14 days.

Hence, we can write,

5\times x + (x-7)\times 3 + (\frac{x-7}{2})\times 5= 16\times 14

5x + 3x - 21 + \frac{5x-35}{2}=224

8x-21+\frac{5x-35}{2}=224

\frac{16x-42+5x-35}{2}=224

21x-77=448

21x=525

x=25

Hence,  The original number of workers is 25.
