Given :  A contractor employed 5 adults and 3 teenagers for one day and paid them a total of $224 per hour.

The following day she employed 3 adults and 5 teenagers for a total of $160 per hour.

To Find : What was the hourly rate paid to each adult and teenager

Solution:

Adult  Rate  per hour  = A  $

Teenager rate per hour  = T $

5 adults and 3 teenagers for one day   paid them a total of $224 per hour

5A  + 3T  = 8 * 224

3 adults and 5 teenagers for one day   paid them a total of $160 per hour

3A  + 5T  = 8 * 160

Adding both

=>  8A + 8T = 8 * 224 +  8 * 160

=> A + T  =  384

2A - 2T  = 8(64)

=> A - T  = 256

2A =  640

=> A = 320

  T  = 64

hourly rate paid to each adult   = 320 $

hourly rate paid to each teenager = 64 $
