Answer:

a. )

  • Sundar told me that he would see me later.

  • Sindhu said that he played chess.

  • Senthil inquired where the post office was.

  • The librarian instructed the students to speak softly.

b. )

  • Shankar said to me, "Do you know him?"

  • Vijay said, "He has taken swimming lessons before."

  • The old woman said to the boy,"Please help me."

Golden Rules:

  • While changing the direct speech into indirect, we will remove the quotation marks and while changing the indirect to direct, we will add the quotation marks.

  • If the sentence is interrogative, we will end it by the question mark followed by quotation mark, whereas in simple imperative and declarative sentences, we will end the sentence by full stop again followed by quotation mark.

  • Simple present will become simple past while changing the direct speech to indirect vice versa.

  • Simple past will become past perfect while changing the direct speech to indirect vice versa.

  • Some other mandatory changes can be observed.
