A convex lens has focal length of 20cm. At what distance from the lens should the object be placed so that it forms a real and inverted image 40cm away from lens? What would be the size of the image formed if the object is 4cm high? With help of a ray diagram show the formation of the image by lens in this case

before seeing my solution please see the sign convention attachment first.

object distance=u

image distance=v=40cm

focal length=20cm

according to lens formula

1/v-1/u=1/f

1/40-1/20=1/u

1/u=-1/40

u=-40

which means it is 40 cm away from lens in the left side at 2f.

Now

As image is real and inverted its height will be negative.=x

so height of object =4cm

magnification=v/u=x/4

=>40/-40=x/4

-4=x

height of image =4cm inverted.

thanks for asking the question
