Hello friends

A convex lens made up of glass of refractive index 1.5 is dipped in turn in :

( 1 ) Medium A of refractive index 1.65

( 2 ) Medium B of refractive index 1.33 . Explain , giving reason , Whether it will behave as a converging lens or a diverging lens in each of these two media .

( 1 ) Fa = ( 4g - 1 ) ( 1 / R1 - 1 / R 2 ) = ( 1.5 /

1.65 - 1 ) ( 1 / R 1 - 1 / R 2 ) = 0.15 / 1.65

( 1 / R 1 - 1 / R 2 )

As Fa is negative , the lens is diverging .

( 2 ) Focal length Fb in medium B of refractive index 1.33 is given by .

Fb = ( B 4g - 1 ( 1 / R 1 - 1 / R 2 ) =( 1.5 /

1.33 - 1 ) 1 / R 1 - 1 / R 2 ) = 0.17 / 1.33

( 1 / R 1 - 1 / R 2

As Fb is positive , the lens is converging .
