A copper ball of mass 6 kg is heated to 500°C and then it is dropped into a vessel containing 15 kg of

water at 10°C. Neglecting the heat energy taken by the vessel, find the final temperature of water.

(Specific heat capacity of copper = 0·4) g-1 °C-1 and specific heat capacity of water = 4.2) 9-1°C-1)

Answer : 28°C ( approx. )

Explanation:

✓ Energy released by copper ball while cooling : mass of copper ball x specific heat capacity of copper x temperature difference ( 500 - final temperature T )

✓ Energy required by water to heat up : mass of water x specific heat capacity of water x temperature difference ( T - 10 )

✓ Since, the vessel takes no energy, we have :

-> Energy released by copper ball = Energy used to heat up water

=> ( 6kg )( 0.4 )( 500 - T ) = ( 15kg )( 4.2 )( T - 10 )

=> T = 6100 ÷ 218 = 27.98 °C
