he mate here is your answer when floating in Water is main reason surface big there for cork flot but irons has small area there for sink
if the cork is smaller than the iron nail it would still float, the question depends on density not their surface area

density of cork is around 0.5 g /cc whereas of iron nail 7.86g/cc. since the density of water is 1g/cc which is more than density of cork but less than that of iron. the cork would float and the iron nail would sink.
the shape of iron was so compact that it couldn't get enough upthrust.
