Britain, during their colonial rule of India, exploited Indian forests.

Indian forests had vast swaths of oak trees, which was very much in demand for British ship-building and railway industries. Indian forests also had exotic spices and other products, not available in Britain or Europe. These products were gaining popularity and demand in Britain at that time and so, the British exported large quantities from India at cheap prices. These were the reasons for introducing various Forest laws, by the colonial British government, which were discriminatory to the tribals living in and around the forests.
