Given : A courier-person cycles from a town to a neighboring suburban area to deliver a parcel to a merchant.  His distance from the town at different times is shown by the following graph.

To Find : (a) What is the scale taken for the time on x – axis?

(b) How much time did the person take for the travel ?

Solution:

scale taken for the time on x – axis

4 units = 1 hr

1 unit = 15 mins

Place is 22 km far

person stopped between 10 to 10:30

from 8 AM to 9 AM = 10km/hr

from 9 AM to 10AM = 6 km/hr

from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM = 6 km/he

Hence from 8 AM to 9 AM Fastest

From the graph person started at 8 AM

and travelled till 11 : 30 AM

Total Travel time  = 11: 30 - 8  =  3hrs 30 mins = 3.5 hrs

Person tool 3.5  hrs for the travel

If Only time of travel to be considered

Then he was not travelling from  10 to 10:30 AM

Hence only travel time = 8 to 10 + 10:30  : 11:30

= 2 + 1

= 3 Hrs
