Answer :

Mass of cricket ball = 150g

  • 150g = 0.15kg

Initial velocity of ball = 12m/s

Final velocity of ball = 20m/s

Time = 0.02s

We have to find impulse and average force exerted on the ball by the bat.

★ Impulse (J) is measured as the change of linear momentum.

➝ Impulse = ∆ (Momentum)

➝ J = m ∆v

➝ J = m (v₂ - v₁)

  • v₂ denotes final velocity
  • v₁ denotes initial velocity

➝ J = 0.15 × [20 - (-12)]

Negative sign shows opposite direction!

➝ J = 0.15 × 32

J = 4.8 N s

★ As per newton's second law of motion, Force is defined as the rate of change of linear momentum.

Mathematically, F = dp/dt

By substituting the values, we get

➠ F = dp/dt

➠ F = 4.8/0.02

F = 240 N

(3) is the correct answer!
