The reason being that the ball is heavy and is coming with a large velocity so will be having a large momentum , which can hurt the hands of the catcher . But if given more time the momentum will keep reducing and it will not hurt , same is done by lowering hands .

a fast moving ball has a large momentum. in stopping this ,it's momentum has to be reduced to zero ..... when cricket player moves back his hand it takes time due to more time taken to stop the ball the rate of change of momentum of ball is decreased.....hence the hands of player do not get hurt....
