Because balls comes in greater speed and in less time to the fielders hand which will cause severe injury to the fielders. So when he give the time back taking his hand backward the speed of the ball also comes slowed to the time and it becomes easier for the fielder to catch.

\textbf{ Hello Mate! }

A cricketer moves his hands backward on catching a fast moving ball.

By formula we clearly knows that
Force = ∆ Momentum / ∆ Time

Hence, if time period is increased more then magnitude of force also reduces.

While in cricket match, players also do same thing. They move their hands back so that force with which ball coming towards them reduces and time period increases which protects their hand from getting hurt.

Hope it helps
