Question:

A cricketer throws a ball with a velocity 60m/s at an angle of 60 degree. He then runs to catch the same ball. What should be his minimum velocity so that he may catch the ball before it strikes the ground?

Answer:

30m/s is the desired answer.

Given :

Initial velocity Vo of the ball = 60m/s

Angle of prohection θo = 60°

To find :

His minimum velocity Vc so that he may catch the ball before it strikes the ground

Solution:

The horizontal velocity of the ball will be

Vox=Vocosθo

Since the horizontal velocity i.e.the initial velocity of a ball remains same, In order to catch the ball, the cricketer has to run at the same horizontal velocity in the direction where he throws the ball

Therefore the velocity at which cricketer run in order to catch

Vc=Vox=60×cos60°

Vc=60×12

Vc=30m/s

Therefore, 30m/s should be his minimum velocity so that he may catch the ball before it strikes the ground.
