A crime was committed in a small town. The police knew the criminal was a man, but they
did not know his name or have a description of him. Then they got a tip-off. The criminal
would be in a particular room in a hotel in town at 8 o'clock that night.
In the room, at 8 o'clock, a carpenter, a plumber, a mason and an electrician were sitting
around a table playing cards. Suddenly the door burst open and two policemen ran in. They
went straight up to the mason and told him, 'You are under arrest'. The criminal knew the
game was up. He went quietly with the police.
How did the police know whom to arrest? Think of all the possibilities. Discuss it among
yourselves. Only your teacher has the answer, but won't tell you till you have all thought
aloud and tried your best.
