Is rubber made out of oil? Yes. Synthetic rubber, the most common kind since the 1940’s, is based on hydrocarbons and sulphur. Standard Oil of New Jersey developed the original formulas for that back in the 1930’s and licensed it to I.G. Farben Chemical conglomerate (Bayer, BASF, etc.) who built the first large synthetic rubber factories for German tires and belts during World War II (Auschwitz was the purpose-built slave labor camp for one of the synthetic rubber factories.) The U.S. developed the technology for large scale production by the end of the war as the Brazilian industry had substantially collapsed and the Japanese Army was fighting in many of SE Asia rubber producing regions
