Only the cubes on the edges are possible to have 2 different colours.

So no. of cubes on 1 edge is = 12/3 = 4

But the ends(vertices) have 3 different colours

Hence only 2 cubes can be obtained on each side

Therefore, the total cubes = no. of edges x cubes

                                             = 12 x 2

                                            = 24
