answer : (a) -40i + 10j (b) 40i - 10j

given, Velocity of cyclist , v_c = 40 i m/s [ eastward ]

velocity of rain, v_r = 10 j m/s [ downward ]

we have to find

velocity of rain relative to the cyclist

and velocity of cyclist relative to the rain.

relative velocity of rain with respect to cyclist, V_rc = v_r - v_c

= 10j - 40i

= (-40i + 10j) m/s

means, velocity of rain relative to the cyclist is (-40i + 10j) m/s

similarly, relative velocity of cyclist with respect to rain, V_cr = v_c - v_r

= 40i - 10j

means, velocity of cyclist relative to rain is (40i - 10j) m/s
