Given info : A cylinder 30cm long and 10cm^2 in cross-section is filled with water.

To find :

  1. pressure
  2. thrust exerted by water on the bottom of the cylinder.

solution : pressure at the bottom of cylinder = ρgh

where ρ = density of water = 10³ kg/m³

g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s²

h = length of cylinder = 30cm = 0.3 m

now, pressure = 10³ × 9.8 × 0.3

= 2.94 × 10³ N/m²

thrust exerted by water on the bottom of the cylinder = pressure × base area

= 2.94 × 10³ N/m² × 10 cm²

= 2.94 × 10³ N/m² × 10 × 10¯⁴ m²

= 2.94 N

Therefore thrust exerted by water on the bottom of the cylinder is 2.94 N.
