A cylinder contains nitrogen gas and a small amount of
liquid water at a temperature of 25°C (the vapour pressure
of water is 23.8 mm Hg). The total pressure is 600 mm Hg. A
piston is pushed into the cylinder until the volume is halved.What is the final total pressure?

Answer:

1176.3 mm of Hg.

Explanation:

Given :

P₁ = 600 - 23.8 mm of Hg

P₁ = 576.2 mm of Hg

V₂ = V₁ / 2  [ when volume is halved ]

According to Boyle law's law :

P₁ V₁ = P₂ V₂

= > 576.2 × V₁ = P₂ × V₁ / 2

= > 1152.4 =  P₂

= >  P₂ = 1152.4 mm of Hg .

Therefore total pressure = ( 1152.4 + 23.8 ) = 1176.3 mm of Hg.

Hence we get required answer.
