Partial pressure can be shown as:

PA = P^0 Xa

As, mass of CO is equal to N2 = m

Molar mass CO = 28 g /mol

Molar mass N2 = 28 g /mol

Mole fraction of CO is

XCO = n1 / n1 + n2

= (m /28 )/ [m /28 + m /28 ]

= 1 /2

Mole fraction of N2 is

XN2 = n2 / n1 + n2

= (m /28 )/ [m /28 + m /28 ]

= 1 /2

As, mole fraction of both the molecules are equal and thus the ratio of partial pressure is 1 :1

Question:

A cylinder was filled with gaseous mixture containing CO N2 (equal masses).The ratio of their partial pressure in cylinder are???

Solution:

Let the equal mass be x.

P(N2) / P(CO) = X(N2) / X(CO)

where, P = partial pressure , X = mole fraction.

and let n be number of moles,

n(N2) / n(CO) = x*28 / 28*x =  1

Hence, P (N2) = P(CO).

Since, partial pressure is equal, thereby, ratio is 1:1
