A cylindrical container is divided into two parts by a
dithermic piston and two different gases are filled in
these parts. It is found that the rms speed of molecules
in first part is equal to the mean speed of molecules in
second part. Find ratio of masses of molecules of these
two gases.

Answer:

Given that

The RMS speed of the gas molecule is Vrms=m3KT

The average velocity of the gas molecule is Vavg=πm28KT

Equating the two velocities:

Vrms=Vavg

⇒m13KT

=πm28KT

where m1 & m2 are mass of gas in left and right chamber respectively.

⇒ So, m13KT

=πm28KT

⇒3m2=3.148m1

⇒m2m1=1.18

Hence, the answer is 1.18
