A cylindrical pressure vessel 8 m long, 4 m in diameter exploded at an internal

pressure of 10 MPa. The vessel is made from 20 mm thick steel with modulus of

elasticity 210 GPa, yield strength 1.2 GPa and surface energy of 120 kJ/m2

. Show

that a conventional strength of materials analysis is not consistent with the fact, but

the failure is compatible with the existence of a longitudinal crack of about 10 mm

long.

It is an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical, used primarily in the production of cellulose acetate for photographic film, polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, and synthetic fibres and fabrics. In households, diluted acetic acid is often used in descaling agents.
