Given info : a cylindrical transparent jar contains half filled with hot water at 60°C and the other half filled with coconut oil at room temperature. Two thermometers are kept on water and the other in coconut oil.

To find : the change observed in the thermometer readings.

Solution : you know, heat transfers from higher temperature to lower temperature until thermal equilibrium is reached.

Here heat transfers from hot water to coconut oil.

let at temperatures T, both water and coconut oil are in same temperatures.

Specific heat of coconut oil = 2.1 j/g/°C

Specific heat of water = 4.2 j/g/°C

Now, heat transferred by water = heat gained by coconut oil

⇒m × 4.2 × (60°C - T) = m × 2.1 × (T - 25°C) [ room temperature is 25°C ]

⇒2(60 - T) = T - 25

⇒120 - 25 = 3T

⇒T = 95/3 ≈ 32°C

So change in thermometer reading of water = (60 - 32) = 28°C

Change in thermometer reading in coconut oil = (32 - 25) = 7°C
