1640 A.D the Britishers established a settlement in Chennai which was known as Fort St George
Explanation:
- The founders of Madras was "Francis Day & his superior Andrew Cogan". On 23rd April 1640, they began constructing Fort St George and residential structures. Their small fortified settlement soon attracted many East Indian Company traders and gradually entered the settlement as the Dutch fell under hostile Indian control
- In 1646 the population of the city reached 19 000 and slightly more with the Dutch & the Portuguese being considerably more at the their forts. The company combined the different towns around an enlarged Fort St. George to further consolidate its position. This includes the fortress, which also had a larger outskirts surrounded by a wall. This region was the settlement of Fort St. George.
