bcoz liquid pressure increases as the depth increases.

because as we go down in water pressure increases same as in oceans increase in depth causes increase in the pressure so the dam is made thick at the bottom because pressure at teh bottom of the dam is the greatest so to prevent the breakage of the dam it's made thick at the bottom,...I hope this helps you
