A dealer buys an article for 7, sells it for 8, buys it back for 9 and sells it again fot 10.
what is the profit or loss he gets?

Think about it this way, if a dealer spends money the number is negative. If they gain money, the number is positive. It works well this way because it's pretty easy to picture money going out as negative and money coming in as positive. So in this instance, if you needed to show your work you would set it up like this:

-7+8-9+10=

1-9+10=

-8+10=

2

or you could work it like this and just rearrange the numbers and work through grouping:

-7+8-9+10=

8+10-7-9+

18-16=

2
