The dealer bought 24 pens for Rs. 60

Given :

A dealer sold 20 pens for Rs. 60 and gained 20%.

To find :

The number of pens the dealer bought for Rs. 60

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Form the equation to calculate number of pens the dealer bought for Rs. 60

Let cost price of each pen = Rs. c

The dealer sold 20 pens for Rs. 60

∴ Selling price of each pen

= Rs. 60/20

= Rs. 3

The dealer gained 20%

So by the given condition

\displaystyle \sf  c + \bigg(c \times  \frac{20}{100} \bigg) = 3

Step 2 of 2 :

Calculate number of pens the dealer bought for Rs. 60

\displaystyle \sf  c + \bigg(c \times  \frac{20}{100} \bigg) = 3

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }c +  \frac{20c}{100}  = 3

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies } \frac{100c + 20c}{100}  = 3

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies } \frac{120c}{100}  = 3

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }c = 3 \times  \frac{100}{120}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }c = 2.50

So cost price of each pen = Rs. 2.50

Hence number of pens the dealer bought for Rs. 60

\displaystyle \sf   =  \frac{60}{2.50}

\displaystyle \sf   = 24
