Immigration is the movement of people from one country to another, seeking asylum, residence or permanent citizenship. These days, there is large-scale immigration from war-torn countries to developed nations, by land as well as by sea.

Where the receiving country has low population and a large land area, it might be feasible to take in immigrants or grant them asylum. In such countries, labour is usually very expensive due to low number of people. Immigrants help to balance this out and provide low-cost labour. Immigrant status is also often provided to such people, based on humanitarian grounds.

At the same time there are drawbacks too. It often results in soaring crime rates as a result of many immigrants not finding suitable jobs in their newly adopted country. Drastic change in culture and customs between their original homeland and the new country, often leads to disillusionment, depression and suicidal tendencies among immigrants.
