colour coating is black as both silver (Ag)and copper(Cu) reacts with atmospheric oxygen and make compounds like copper oxide and silver oxide

damages is that due to corrosion the mass substance is reduced and it makes the material more weaker

u can prevent it by applying a coat of anything which prevents it to react with the other reactant due to which our material undergoes corrosion
eg u can paint iron to prevent it from rusting

it can be advantageous as if cu and ag forms a layer of oxide on then it can be further prevent them from corrosion as that layer is itself inert and hence your material will not corrode further
