(a) Define the term 'work'. Write the formula for the work done on a body when a force acts on the body in the direction of its displacement. Give the meaning of each symbol which occurs in the formula.
(b) A person of mass 50 kg climbs a tower of height 72 metres. Calculate the work done. (g = 9.8 m s^(-2))

✍️ Numerically, work can be defined as the product of force applied on a body and the displacement covered by that body in the direction of the applied force.

✍️ In other words, work is said to be done by a force on a body if the applied force causes a displacement of the body but not in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the force.

✍️ W = F × S (Here, W refers the work done, F refers to the applied force and S refers to the displacement that is covered by the body in the direction of the applied force).

✍️ Force = Mass of a body × Acceleration due to gravity = (50×9.8) N = 490 N [Here, N means Newton which is the unit of force]

So, work done = (490×72) J = 35280 J [Here, J means Joule which is the unit of work]
