A democracy is accountable by definition. It allows you, as a citizen, to check the work (and exigencies) of the elected. It gives you the right to be heard and be addressed. It empowers you to be informed of the government's work. It allows for criticism, and it allows for change, and therefore, it allows for checks and balances in the system of governance which will ensure the government is answerable to institutions, and ultimately to its people. Most important of all, democracies are for the people and by the people; where the people are the Kings and King makers. (Akand Sitra's answer covers these aspects very well, in India's context)
The disadvantage is that the people can be very short sighted and bamboozled into believing lies and propaganda (Julius Ceasar -esque). A disadvantage is that political and economic illiteracy has a weighing down effect on the state, via the ballot. The disadvantage is that propaganda/false impressions will be reflected in the functioning of the state, leading to the implosion of the state, some day (when the propaganda bears fruition. For example, by asserting majoritarian domination, through violence and riots, everyone stands to lose). A disadvantage is that democracies are slow and can lead to a discontented polity that expected to win gold by electing a government. The biggest disadvantage is that democracies, by definition, cannot thoroughly serve everybody, even though, in its inaction, it acts justly and equally.
