(A) Derek’s mother was opposed to the idea of him returning to Mr. Lamb. Is there a

justification for her apprehensiveness? What did Derek do? How do you justify his

action considering that blind obedience to parents is expected in our society

It is true Derek’s mother was opposed to the idea of him returning to Mr. Lamb, however, he was determined to return to him. Her apprehension was unjustified as she did not know Mr. Lamb’s true qualities and nature. She had made her perception about him on the basis of rumours she had heard about him.

Derek, going against his mother’s opposition, did return to Mr. Lamb. He was right in doing so. He had found Mr. Lamb to be uniquely different and agreeable from all the people he had met in his life. He was quite friendly, amiable, easy to talk to, and pleasant. First time in his life he met someone who had shown interest in him. The most surprising quality that he liked in him was his acceptance of him. He had not shown any shock at his scar. He felt safe, secure, and unembarrassed in his company. So, he felt himself drawn to Mr. Lamb.
