Question : Describe the reaction of potassium with water. Write the equation of the reaction involved.

Answer : Potassium reacts violently with cold water to form potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas: 2K(s)+ 2H2O(l) --------> 2KOH(aq) + H2(g) + heat. In this reaction so much heat is produced get hydrogen gas formed catches fire and burns explosively.

Question : Write an equation of the reaction of iron with steam. Indicate the physical states of all the reactants and products.

Question : Which gas is produced when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to a reactive metal

Answer : When a reactive metal reacts with hydrochloric acid hydrogen gas is produced A reactive metal displaces the hydrogen from acid and release hydrogen gas. Answer: hydrogen gas is evolved when the dilute hydrochloric acid added to a reactive metal when iron reacts with dilute H2SO4 the evolution of gas is formed.

Explanation:

  • (a) Potassium reacts with cold water violently to form hydrogen gas and potassium hydroxide.
  • (b) When the iron reacts with steam, the reactants and products physical states appear as below:

                     2 H_{2} O(l)+2 K(s) \rightarrow 2 K O H(a q)+\text { Heat }+H_{2}(g)

                     3 F e(s)+4 H_{2} O(g) \rightarrow 4 H_{2}(g)3 F e(s)+4 H_{2} O(g) \rightarrow 4 H_{2}(g)

  • (c) When dilute hydrochloric acid is added to a reactive metal, hydrogen gas is produced.
  • When Potassium reacts with atomospheric oxygen, within few seconds of exposure, flaky white potassium peroxide is formed.
