A designer enlarged both the length and the width of a rectangular carpet by 60 percent. The new carpet was too large so the designer was asked to reduce its length and its width by 25 percent. The area of the final item was what percent greater than the area of the original?

length = l
width = w

after 60% increase

length = 1.6l
width = 1.6w

now 25% is reduced
then
length = 1.2l
width = 1.2w

now area = 1.44×l×w

which is 1.44 times initial area

so the final item has area 44% greater then initial
