Given:

The weight of the diamond = 3.71 g

The weight of the box = 1.4 kg

To find:

The total weight of the box and diamond to the correct number of significant figures

Solution:

Firstly, we will convert the weight of the diamond in kg for easy calculations

If 1 g = \frac{1}{1000} kg

Then 3.71 g = \frac{3.71}{1000} kg = 0.00371 kg

Secondly, we will add up both the weights to get the total weight i.e.,

∴ The total weight of the box and diamond is,

= 1.4 kg + 0.00371 kg

= 1.40371 kg

Thirdly, we will round the total weight of the box to the correct number of significant figures:

  • The number should retain the same no. of digits as that of the number with least decimal places.
  • Now, we got the final answer as 1.40371 ⇒ here the first non-zero digit after zero is 3 which is less than 5.
  • So we drop down 3 and keep zero as it is.
  • Rounded to its significant figures final answer is 1.4 kg

Thus, the total weight of the box and diamond to the correct number of significant figures is 1.4 kg.
