Explanation:

The potential energy of electric dipole is,

U=− P . E

=−PEcosθ

where E= uniform electric field

P=Electric dipole

θ= angle between field and dipole

From the above equation, we can see that the potential energy of dipole placed in an external field is zero when the angle Ɵ is equal to 90° or when the dipole makes an angle of 90°

Hope it helps!

When a dipole is placed in uniform electric field having zero potential energy, then the angle between dipole moment and an electric field is 90°

  • Considering a dipole with charges as q1 = +q and q2 = -q which are placed in a uniform electric field. The charges are separated by the magnitude and distance of an electric field (E).
  • When a dipole is placed in a uniform electrical field, there is no force on both the charges as a whole, but it experiences a torque. Thus, t = p × E.
  • The torque will rotate the dipole from angle Ф to Ф1. Thus, Ф = pE ( cosФ - cosФ1). Thus, as per the equation an angle of 90° will be formed.
