Given:

The cost of milk = Rs. 10 per litre

Amount water mixed in the mixture by the milkman = 5 litres

The selling price of the mixture = Rs. 10 per litre

Profit earned while selling the mixture = 25%

To find:

The original quantity of mixture that the milkman had

Solution:

We know that pure water doesn’t cost anything

∴ The cost price of pure water will be = Rs. 0

According to the question, we can get the cost price of the mixture as:

The C.P. of the mixture =  \frac{100}{100 + 25} * 10 = \frac{100}{125} * 10 = Rs. \:8\:  per \:litre

[ Formula used for the above calculation: C.P. = \frac{100}{100\: +\: Gain} * S.P. ]

Now, by using the rule of mixture and alligations, we get

Milk (cost per litre)                        Water (cost per litre)

         10                                                        0

                                  8 (Mixture)

        (8 - 0)                                               (10 - 8)

           8                                                        2

The ratio of milk and water in the mixture = 8 : 2 = 4 : 1

Let "x" litres be the quantity of the mixture that the milkman had.

We have been given the quantity of water in the mixture as 5 litres, therefore to find the quantity of the mixture we can apply the following calculation:

The quantity of water in the mixture = [ the parts of water in the milk & water ratio ] * [ the original quantity of the mixture ]

On substituting the values, we get

5 = \frac{1}{5} * x

x = 5 * 5

x = 25 litres

Thus, the quantity of mixture that the milkman had was 25 litres.
