Step-by-step explanation:

First, the diver descends 20 feet. Then he ascends 12 feet.

So, his present depth= 20-12 feet.=8 feet.

Then, he descends another 18 feet.

So, now his depth becomes 8+ 18 feet

= 26 feet.

How can it be -20+12-18

because you see, depth is measured from the surface of water. So, first depth = 20 feet and not -20 feet. (depth)

then he rises 12 feet. So 20-12. because now his depth decreases by 12 feet. And finally he descends again. So, it is (20-12)+18.
