When plaster of paris is applied on surgical bandages after making them wet it again gains its water of crystalisation and becomes hard. Thus keeping the fractured bone in it's place. Soft gypsum present in bandages converts to hard plaster of paris when water is added to it and gives good support to fractured bones.

Answer:

Surgical bandages bandages are made from plaster of paris which is also known as P.O.P. When applied applied on the fractured bones after making them wet, it changes into a hard mass called gypsum.

The hard mass keeps the bones in proper position and the gap is slowly filled because of calcification that is taking place on the broken part. This helps helps in uniting broken bones and they changed to a single piece again.
