Step-by-step explanation:

Given A dog and a cat are standing at the 4m and 9m mark respectively on a metre long road. The dog jumps 5m while the cat jumps 4m every time. If both start from their positions at the same time, after how many jumps will the dog catch the cat?

  • Now dog and cat are standing at 4m and 9 m on a long road.
  • Both of them will catch up after some point.
  • The number of jumps will be same.
  • Let the number of jumps be x
  • Now dog = 4 + 5x
  • So cat = 9 + 4x
  • Equating we get
  •      4 + 5x = 9 + 4x
  •     So x = 5
  • Now dog = 4 + 5x
  •                 = 4 + 25
  •                  = 29
  • Cat = 9 + 4x
  •        = 9 + 20
  •         = 29
  • So after 5 jumps the dog will be able to catch the cat.
