Given:

  • Dog hears echo after 0.5 seconds.
  • Speed of sound = 346 m/s.

To find:

Distance from dog and building?

Calculation:

When the dog barked, the sound wave travelled towards the building and then got reflected from the building. Then it travelled the same distance back to the dog's ear.

So, let distance between dog and building is x.

Hence, the sound wave travelled (x+x) = 2x distance in that 0.5 sec.

Hence, we can say:

2x = v \times t

 \implies \: 2x = 346 \times 0.5

 \implies \: x = 346  \times  \dfrac{1}{4}

 \implies \: x =86.5 \: m

So, distance between dog and building is 86.5 metres.
