Horses and donkeys are not the same species, yet they both belong to the Equidae family and the genus Equus. They each have distinct chromosomal counts. Despite the fact that they appear to be relatively similar, there are numerous differences.

On a genetic level, the horse has 64 chromosomes and the donkey has 62 chromosomes. Mules are crossbreeds between a female horse and a male donkey. Hinny is a cross between a donkey and a horse. Both donkey and horse kids are infertile, sterile, and incapable of having their own progeny, and they contain 31 pairs of chromosomes each.
