Doubly reinforced beam is considered less economical than singly reinforced because of economic reasons as steel is more expensive than concrete. Also if the reinforcement is in excess then the failure of the beam will be on the compression side and as concrete is a brittle material, it will be a sudden failure. During construction we want the beam to fail on the tension side.
