GiveN :

  • First Resistance (R1) = 4Ω
  • Second Resistance (R2) = 12Ω

To FinD :

  • Effective resistance in series as well in parallel.

SolutioN :

Use formula for Resistance in series :

\dashrightarrow {\boxed{\tt{R_s \: = \: R_1 \: + \: R_2}}} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{R_s \: = \: 12 \: + \: 4} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{R_s \: = \: 16} \\ \\ \underline{\sf{\therefore \: Effective \: Resistance \: in \: series \: is \: 16 \: \Omega}}

Now, use formula for Resistance in Parallel :

\dashrightarrow \boxed{\tt{\dfrac{1}{R_p} \: = \: \dfrac{1}{R_1} \: + \: \dfrac{1}{R_2}}} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{\dfrac{1}{R_p} \: = \: \dfrac{1}{4} \: + \: \dfrac{1}{12}} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{\dfrac{1}{R_p} \: = \: \dfrac{3 \: + \: 1}{12}} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{\dfrac{1}{R_p} \: = \:\dfrac{4}{12}} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{R_p \: = \: \dfrac{12}{4}} \\ \\ \dashrightarrow \tt{R_p \: = \: 3} \\ \\ \underline{\sf{\therefore \: Effective \: Resistance \: in \: Parallel \: is \: 3 \: \Omega}}

  • For (A) see attached figure
