A dustbin of mass 12kg standing on a horizontal ground is pushed by a horizontal force of 40N. If the coefficient of static friction is 0.4, will the dustbin move?

The object will move only if the force (F) will be able to overcome the force of friction (f).

f = μMg

M = mass of the dustbin = 12 kg

g = acceleration due to gravity

μ = coefficient of friction

Now, max frictional force =  μMg = 0.4 x 12 x 10 = 48N

48 N > 40 N

F > f

Where,

f = force due to friction

F = applied external force

Therefore, the object will move.
