As he neared the room, he heard the heart-rending cry of a woman. He was frightened at first but soon gained courage and went forward. He peeped through an open window and was surprised to see that three persons wearing black jackets were standing around a middle-aged woman. They were trying to get some secret out of her. One of them seemed to be the leader of the group. He had a whip in his hand and his face was red with anger. He was mercilessly lashing the helpless woman.
